Decimal comes from the Latin root decem, which means ten. To understand decimal numbers you need to understand how ten forms the basis of our number system.Think of a number line for a moment. Draw little lines between 0 and 1 so that it is divided into ten tiny parts - tenths! These tiny parts are valued at 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 all the way to 0.9.
See how the number line between 0 and 1 is divided into ten increments or parts. Each of these ten parts is a tenth.
Now between 1 and 2, we would have 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 1.4 all the way to 1.9.
This same rule applies between any 2 numbers on a number line.
This is esential to understanding working with decimals.
